STEM Ambassador Spaghetti Tower Challenge

29 May 2019

CHC STEM Ambassador, Andrew Robinson, recently completed the last session in a trio of Enrichment Afternoons at St James Lower Darwin Primary School. As part of the afternoon over 20 different activities were offered to the children.

Andrew set the children a Spaghetti Tower challenge. Aimed at primary learners, this resource asks children to design and build a tower using spaghetti and plasticine. This challenge links design and technology, mathematics and science as children use problem-solving strategies and knowledge of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes to build their towers.

Looking at different towers from around the world, the children discussed where and why particular shapes are used in the environment. They then went on to use this knowledge to design, build and evaluate their own constructions. Some very impressive towers were constructed.
