SITE/SETTING OUT ENGINEER

Location: Yorkshire

Role: Cheetham Hill Construction is a family run business which has been operating for over 55 years. We are currently looking for a Site/Setting out engineer for projects across Yorkshire.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Setting out to lines and levels to ensure construction of work in accordance with the Contract Drawings/Specifications or other relevant control documentation
  • Prepare and maintain work record and data sheets and ensure work is carried out in accordance with contract requirements
  • Assist Site Agents/Contract Supervisors/Contracts Managers with general contract administration
  • Complete topographical surveys and assist with setting up and monitoring of GPS on the plant equipment
  • Maintain contract management quality records as directed by Site Agent/Contracts Manager
  • Produce As-Built Drawings in accordance with Client requirements
  • Carry out site surveys for weekly/monthly measurement purposes
  • Submit processed information to Company Quantity Surveyors and Site Agents
  • Assist with the control of site activities, including sub-contractors, as directed by Site Agent/Contracts Manager
  • Ensure compliance with individual responsibilities with regard to safety, health and environmental issues, as set out in the Group Safety, Health and Environmental Policy
  • Complete daily site diary
  • Project a professional image
  • Have the ability to work as part of a team and maintain client relations

The ideal candidate: The following qualifications/competencies are required:

  • Valid CSCS card
  • Some knowledge of working with LSS or similar software.
  • Experienced in a variety of Civil Engineering disciplines
  • Oral/written communication
  • Flexibility
  • Organised
  • Be able to problem solve
  • Computer literate

With experience of working in any capacity on civil engineering projects, including Earthworks, Drainage and Reinforced Concrete, you will preferably hold or be working towards a qualification in Civil Engineering.

Quantity Surveyor

Location: Barrow-in-Furness

Role: Cheetham Hill Construction is a family run, award-winning civil engineering and plant hire contractor which has been operating for over 55 years, undertaking work on a wide variety of projects up to £15M in value across the country for several high-profile clients. Based on site in Barrow, and reporting to the Commercial Director, you’ll be part of an established team of Quantity Surveyors and will assist in the day-to-day financial management of allocated contracts, including procurement, monitoring, and payment of nominated subcontractors.

Key responsibilities:

  • Managing monthly cost reports, as well as forecasting cost and value accurately from commencement of a project through to project completion on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
  • Prompt submission of interim and final valuations
  • Reviewing contract progress and proactively address issues, including the issuing of relevant notices as required.
  • Reviewing all issues, providing solutions, costs, and advice to ensure successful project completion.
  • Ensuring cash flow is maintained and providing early forecasting of any shortfall.
  • The procurement, placement of orders, payment, monitoring, and review of subcontractors.
  • Agreeing final accounts with clients and subcontractors

The ideal candidate: 

An experienced Quantity Surveyor, you’ll be commercially aware, contractually astute, and conversant in the NEC Suite of Contracts; FIDIC, ICC and JCT contracts. 

In addition, we’ll expect you to be enthusiastic, an excellent team player and equally comfortable working alone. You’ll be able to show us a successful track record of the commercial management of civil engineering projects.

Environmental Practitioner

Location: Based Bury, Greater Manchester

Role: Cheetham Hill Construction is a family-owned Civil Engineering business based in Bury, Greater Manchester. We carry out a huge variety of civil engineering and construction contracts, ranging in value from £5,000 to £15million for an increasingly broad spectrum of clients.

We are hoping to find an Environmental Management graduate to join our QESH department. Ideally someone with an interest in construction and looking for a varied and autonomous role within a well-established company.  You will split your time between being office-based and visiting sites primarily across the North-West and Yorkshire liaising with management and employees.

The Role:

  • To lead on Environmental tasks and assist the QESH Department in developing and maintaining industry standards and legislation
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the Company’s Integrated Management System to ISO14001.
  • Be available to all employees for specialist environmental advice including carbon net-zero and sustainable practice.
  • Assist in the production of Construction Environmental Management Plans
  • Proactively liaise with statutory and non-statutory bodies
  • Complete pre-qualification and tender questionnaires relating to Environmental aspects.
  • Assist with the Company’s sustainability strategy including the use of purpose-built software
  • To undertake the planning, coordination, and execution of internal audits of the EMS, including the identification of non-compliances, corrective actions monitoring and reporting.
  • To support external audits, inspections, or investigations, as required, to meet the requirements of our clients, their agents, certification bodies or regulators etc
  • To work closely with key stakeholders to support the delivery of decarbonisation plans and liaise with other business functions, as necessary, to promote environmental requirements, as well as good practice.

Skills and experience:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant environmental discipline
  • An ability to communicate clearly both verbally and through written work with a high level of computer literacy, in particular Microsoft Office
  • An understanding of the importance of health, safety, quality and environmental excellence
  • Willingness to travel to locations across the North of England. 
  • A sound understanding of relevant UK environmental and planning legislation.
  • Good working knowledge of ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) and associated documentation.
  • A working knowledge of sustainability and carbon reduction, with an understanding of Net Zero and emissions categories.
  • Strong analytical skills for inputting and interpreting carbon reporting data.
  • Working towards or qualified as a Trained internal environmental auditor.
  • Planning and managing tasks to meet requirements and deadlines.

PLANNER

Location: Bury based

Role: Cheetham Hill Construction is a family run business which has been operating for over 55 years. We are looking for a Planner to join our Head office team who will be involved in the Design, Procurement, Construction, Installation & Commissioning activities for each project, from tender through to completion. You will also review the progress of programmes on a regular cycle, and management reporting as and when required.

On a day-to-day basis you could be involved with:

  • Developing the tender programme into construction programme with assistance from engineering/construction staff.
  • Producing programmes from “First Principles” with assistance from engineering/ construction staff
  • Co-ordinating input from all departments into the programme
  • Progressing programmes with site teams, highlighting areas of concern and introducing mitigation measures
  • Regular site visits to assist site teams with planning matters
  • Liaising with site teams regarding input into programme development
  • Collating progress information and the production of progress reporting
  • Updating the programme following Change Control procedure

You will need some experience in the planning of construction and civil engineering projects along with a knowledge of current HSE requirements. With excellent communication skills you will be computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office including Microsoft Project and have a valid CSCS Visitor card.

Contracts Manager

Location: North West based

We are now seeking a Contracts Manager, experienced in civil engineering and earthworks to join our team, working out of our Head Office in Bury and covering the North West.

What you will be doing:

On a day-to-day basis we will expect you to:

  • Ensure contracts are completed to budget and within client-defined timescales
  • Take ownership and responsibility for all aspects of each contract
  • Produce a resourced cost plan/programme for each contract prior to commencement
  • Promote best practice, and ensure use of Company Policies/Procedures in terms of financial management, Health & Safety, Quality, Environmental and engineering on all aspects of the contract
  • Enhance our reputation through fostering positive working relationships with clients, designers, and consultants
  • Question on an ongoing basis, production levels, gang sizes, material alternatives etc, to ensure that maximum efficiency/best buying practices are constantly being undertaken
  • Support and offer advice to all members of your team whilst ensuring our company procedures are followed in the construction of the works
  • Provide fortnightly cost/value and progress/programme comparisons.

Qualifications: To be successful in this role we will expect you to have the following:

  • Ideally hold a Civil Engineering Degree
  • Valid CSCS card
  • Be competent in Health and Safety practice
  • Current valid driving license

Experience: If you have significant experience managing all aspects of civil engineering projects, including drainage, concrete, piling, earthworks, utilities and river works, we would like to hear from you. Equally important will be your site management experience and ability to manage budgets/ programmes. Outstanding communication skills will be required in order to lead negotiations with client representatives at a senior level and knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts is also required.

SENIOR ESTIMATOR (CIVIL ENGINEERING)

You will play a crucial role in supporting the continuous flow of new business through the Company. We conduct a wide variety of civil engineering and construction contracts, ranging in value from £5,000 to £15million for an increasingly broad spectrum of clients. Ideally, you will have already worked in a similar role for a civil engineering contractor, pricing works involving earthworks, concrete, drainage, and remediation etc.

What you will be doing: On a day-to-day basis, you will be involved in:

  • Reviewing incoming enquiries
  • Assessing all relevant technical issues
  • Conducting site visits
  • Preparing take-offs and materials schedules
  • Preparing subcontract enquiries and evaluating quotations
  • Preparing estimates and outlining programmes for the costs of the works
  • Coordinating tender submissions including health and safety, environmental and quality elements
  • Submitting proposals to clients
  • Negotiating terms and conditions with clients prior to contract award  
  • Participating in tender handover meetings

What you will need: 

  • Good IT skills, including the Microsoft Office suite of software
  • Knowledge of estimating software and Microsoft Project beneficial but not essential
  • Ability to review construction drawings and perform quantity take-offs
  • Skill to produce estimates from first principles
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good time-management and organisational skills and the ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times
  • A professional attitude to representing the Company

SENIOR SITE MANAGER

Location: North West based

We are looking for a Senior Site Manager, with at least 5 years’ experience of managing/supervising staff in general groundworks and civils work including drainage, highways, reinforced concrete, remediation, and hard landscaping to work primarily on our contracts for the Environment Agency.

On a day-to-day basis, we will expect you to:

  • Plan and organise labour and plant on site
  • Work as part of a team and maintain client relations
  • Uphold high safety standards at all times

  • Maintain Quality Control
  • Ensure resources are used efficiently on site and that it is a safe and tidy place to work and visit
