Springhill Hospice Community Project

Springhill Hospice Community Charity Project

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2024, CHC groundwork apprentices Kian and Joe have been taking part in a community charity project at Springhill Hospice, Rochdale organised by Hopwood Hall College. The project aims to make a positive impact on the patients and help make a difference in the community.

It includes:

  • Preparing and laying a slab/base for a poly tunnel, offering a practical experience in groundwork and sub-base materials handling.
  • Reinstating loose or broken pavers, providing a real-world application in laying paving and maintaining outdoor spaces.
  • Clearing an area for a Japanese garden, involving site preparation and use of various tools.

These activities not only align with occupational skills like site preparation and material handling but also offer insights into health and safety practices, professional judgment, and work ethic – all integral parts of the Groundworker apprenticeship knowledge, skills, and behaviours.

In addition, engaging in charitable activities can lead to personal growth and development. It provides opportunities to learn new skills and develop a greater understanding of the challenges faced by others.

Encouraging involvement in community initiatives like this helps to promote a culture of social responsibility. The experience Kian and Joe will gain during this charity project will not only benefit them personally but will also contribute positively to their workplace environment.
