CHC wins Green Apple National Gold Award
Cheetham Hill Construction was a winner at the Green Apple Environment Awards 2016, the international campaign to find the greenest companies, councils and communities.
The Company was presented with a National Gold Award in the Building and Construction Regeneration category for its Old Swan Household Waste Recycling Centre project.
The Old Swan HWRC project was completed earlier this year for client Merseyside Recycling Waste Authority and required the design and construction of a new HWRC in Liverpool.
Regeneration, ecology and sustainability were key to this project and careful consideration was given to incorporating these aspects into the works.
67% by volume of material from deconstruction of the original site was incorporated into the construction of the project and at the end of its useful life, over 95% of the HWRC infrastructure can be dismantled then reused or recycled.
New trees were established on site, planted as whips and feathered tree in varieties that are suitable for the local area. Bird boxes and insect boxes, made from sustainable materials, were also attached to various trees and fencing to encourage bird nesting.
The landscaping on site is now more than 650m2, that’s 100% net increase in area of wildlife habitat that will improve and enhance the ecological diversity in what was a derelict area. There is a long term plan for the site including a maintenance and aftercare programme so the landscaped area will flourish and establish within five years of planting.
The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country’s major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries.
The awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an international, independent, non-political, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
