Chapter 7 - From ADT operator to Plant Maintenance Manager

13 May 2026

This is David’s story

I joined CHC in 2023 as an ADT Operator, with no previous experience in the plant industry at all. I’d been interested in plant machinery for a few years but didn’t really know how to take that first step into the sector.

After starting a conversation with CHC, they supported me by putting me through my ADT training. Once I’d passed the course, I was taken on full-time, and that’s where my career in the industry really began.

Stepping into a completely new industry and learning a whole new skill set wasn’t easy, but I really enjoyed working on site and was always keen to learn more. After 12 months, I was put forward for Excavator training, which helped me build on my experience and gain hands-on knowledge with different types of plant machinery.

Another 12 months later, the role of Plant Maintenance Manager became available in the office. With the experience I’d built up over the previous two years – along with transferable skills from my earlier jobs – I felt confident stepping into the role.

There isn’t one single moment that stands out for me. Instead, I’m proud of every milestone I’ve reached since joining CHC. Each machine ticket I’ve earned has felt like a big achievement and a real reminder of how far I’ve come, especially considering I started with no prior experience. Seeing my skills, knowledge and responsibilities continue to grow has been a huge personal milestone.

I honestly don’t think I’d be where I am today without the support and guidance of Claire Chamberlain and Sean Isherwood. From day one, I’ve always felt backed by CHC. They’ve created an environment where, if you’re willing to work hard and keep learning, there are genuine opportunities to progress within the company.

Because I’m still relatively new to the industry, I’m constantly learning something new. Whether it’s different types of plant machinery, new project types or the plant hire side of the business, no two days are ever the same. I also really value working for a family-run business, where everyone supports one another and works together to get the job done. I especially enjoy the problem-solving side of my role and the variety of challenges that come with it.

If you’re starting your career at CHC, my advice would be simple: be willing to learn, work hard and take every opportunity that comes your way. Even if you’re new to the industry or don’t have much experience, there’s plenty of support and real chances to progress if you have the right attitude. Ask questions, learn from the people around you and make the most of the experience and knowledge within the company.
