Chapter 5 – Barry - the man behind the wheel

16 Apr 2026

Nearly 35 years on from joining CHC in 1991, Barry reflects on a career shaped by variety, supportive colleagues and a passion for trucks and driving.

"I first joined CHC back in 1991, although I was already driving for TJ Murphy at the time. My dad, Frank Collins, was already working for Cheetham Hill then, driving a 428. He told me they were looking for a driver, so I went along on the Friday, and started the following Monday!

I’d never operated a HIAB before, so I was well and truly thrown in at the deep end. Lucky for me, my first job was with Dave May in North Wales, and he took the time to show me the ropes. It was a steep learning curve, but a great start.

Although the nature of the job hasn’t changed, it has certainly evolved. When I started, I was driving a Leyland Freighter with no radio. Today, I’m in a Volvo, and the roads are far busier with much heavier traffic. Some days I’m local, other days I could be anywhere from Northampton to Scotland. No two days are ever the same, and that’s part of what I enjoy.

Looking back, I’m proud to have achieved 25 years’ service with CHC, and even prouder to now be approaching 35 years. I’ve loved the driving, but it’s the people who have made all the difference. My dad played a huge part in getting me here, and Howard Chamberlain and CHC have provided security for me, my family, Daisy, Jo - and even the dogs, Theo and Chester.

For me, the best things about CHC are the people and the variety. If you’re thinking about joining us, my advice is simple, just go for it. Work hard, and you’ll be given plenty of opportunities to progress"
