CECA Award winners!

11 Oct 2021

On Friday 8th October CHC scooped  Project of the Year under £1m award and one of CHCs apprentices Sam Ellithorn was highly commended for Young Professional of the year at the CECA Northwest awards held at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.

Project of the year: EA Framework – Debris Screen Package 2 North West

The package relates to the EAs high risk debris screen national programme where there is a known risk of flooding to the local communities. There was a real focus on completing the works to a high standard in a very short timescale. The EA and CHC worked collaboratively and involved stakeholders in all discussions.

To assist the EA in their ambition to achieve net carbon zero by 2030 we developed the designs to utilise low carbon concrete in the new structures and reduced emissions by using HVO fuel in lieu of gas oil.

The works at the 9 sites were completed in a 31-week period to the satisfaction of the Environment Agency with the North West schemes being far ahead of the other regions nationally. Such was the success of the works, a further 10 sites are now being progressed.

Mike Goodier, Contracts Director, was honoured to receive the award, along with Nikki Welch, Site Agent, on behalf of the whole team at CHC and the EA. The collaboration of all parties enabled over two thousand properties to be removed from the at risk register in a very short timescale.

Highly commended young professional of the year – Sam Ellithorn, Site Engineer

Sam used his own drive and determination to secure work paid for work experience with the Company while he was studying Mechanical Engineering Bury College.

During his 45 day placement Sam worked on Broadway Green on Mondays and Fridays gaining insight into what civil engineering involved. Unfortunately, Sam’s initial placement was cut short due to COVID-19. Impressed by Sam’s work ethic the Company was able to offer Sam a three-month paid work placement during the summer fitting in with his studies. This has led  to the Company offering Sam a Higher Level Apprenticeship Degree at the University of Salford in Civil Engineering. Sam is now working on CHC’s HS2 Project in Birmingham.

Robert Bishop, Contracts Manager at Cheetham Hill Construction, said, “Sam has been a great addition to our team. He has an admirable work ethic, with a proactive, ‘can do’ attitude and is willing to take on any task requested of him. He is well liked by his colleagues and quickly builds relationships with our client representatives through his mature approach to work. Sam is not afraid to ask for advice from his Line Managers and this attitude has seen him progress well in the short time that he has been with us. If he continues in this manner and chooses this career path, he will have a great future with CHC.”
