The Project

Starting in May 2023 and completed in April 2024, the project encompassed the construction of a new secondary clarifier tank measuring 5 metres in height and 27 metres in diameter. The scope included associated inlet and outlet pipework, mechanical and electrical controls, access roads, lighting, and access walkways with staircases. Designed to operate in parallel with the existing clarifier, the new unit was introduced to enhance the plant’s overall throughput.

Although smaller than the existing clarifier, the new unit will handle approximately 31% of total flows when both are in operation. Independent isolation of each clarifier was a key requirement, ensuring operational flexibility. Sludge and clarified water from the new clarifier will be directed to the existing downstream collection chambers.

The project was executed in collaboration with multiple subcontractors, including Offafix, WES, Cohesion Piling, Meri, Murray Rix, and Chapman Scaffolding. The scope of work encompassed utility protection, site establishment, piling, reinforced concrete structures, access roads, temporary works, mechanical and electrical installations, scraper bridge installation, and the diversion of existing utilities.

During the project, a late-stage design change related to the scraper bridge required a rapid re-sequencing of the program. Through swift and efficient intervention, we successfully mitigated potential delays, ensuring minimal impact on the project timeline and exceeding client expectations.
