The Project

We were appointed Principal Contractor by the City of Lincoln Council to supply and install a newly fabricated debris screen into the existing inlet at Hartsholme Lake Country Park. The objective was to stop debris blocking the existing culvert, which would lead to a blockage, and potentially a flood of the surrounding area.

The client wanted to keep the existing aesthetics, so we had to remove the existing fencing and ornate stonework, which we stored on site. The fencing was given a new coat of paint, and the stonework was cleaned using a doff cleaning method.

We broke out the existing concrete slab behind the fencing down to the brickwork underneath, so that the structure could be built up. The brickwork was raked, repointed and built up five courses, allowing the debris screen to tie in with the surroundings.

As the client wanted further control over the water level of the lake, we installed removable stop logs with guides that were fixed to the newly built up engineering brick wall along the concrete aprons either side of the inlet.

Once the internal brickwork at the back of the proposed screen had been built up, we had to cast a reinforced concrete slab to form part of the footpath, which would allow the public to continue their circular walk of the park. There was also some screeding which needed to be carried out to the concrete aprons, on either side of the inlet, which were built up with a brushed finish to clean up the general overview.

We fixed the steel beams, debris screen and handrailing in the built up structure to finally achieve the desired use of the project. The existing fencing and ornate stonework were then installed.

Alongside this, two concrete beams were cast 20m long either side of the structure, which acted as a strip foundation for fencing to be fixed, matching the design of the original. Behind this, a new drainage system was installed.

The existing footpath was built up with type 1, and a limestone dust as a top layer, so that the public had a gentle ramp over the new built up structure.

As part of our social value contribution to the project, we made a donation of £15,000 to Lincoln Community Larder, which would provide 1,500 days of food to 2 adults (£30 2 adults, 3 days) or feed 8 adults for a year.
