The transformation of a municipal landfill site to a thriving business, residential and leisure area.
This project was carried out in phases spread over a period of several years. CHC was involved in the majority of the enabling and infrastructure works including:
Airport Tip Reclamation - Reclamation of a former landfill site required the excavation of 750,000m3 of inert, intermixed and putrid waste. The materials were sorted into three groups; i) inert materials, which were crushed, chemically tested and re-used on site as a starter layer ii) Intermixed material was screened in a rotary Trommel Screen to separate putrid waste from the inert rubble, which was then incorporated within the site iii) Putrid waste, which was disposed of in a purpose built landfill cell constructed on the site using 1m mineral liner and capped using 300mm bentonite enhanced sand.
Lakeland Stage 3 - Laying of 8000m of sewer in open cut, 225mm to 975mm in diameter, up to 7.5m deep. Works also included ancillary civils work and a pumping station.
Lower Lake & Overflow Settling Pond - Construction of a storm water-balancing pond using gabion cages and a reed filtering system plus associated landscape works.
Lake Edge Detail - Construction of 1300m of insitu reinforced concrete retaining wall as lake edge detail. An exposed aggregate pre-cast concrete coping incorporating a cast iron post and chain fence provided protection to a pre-cast flag walkway. Soft and hard landscaping with lighting was also provided.
Lakeland Boulevard Road & Bridge - Construction of a road bridge with PC beams and RC abutments faced with brickwork to carry a new dual carriageway over a marina watercourse. A new road, roundabout and associated drainage, together with hard and soft landscaping, were also constructed.
Lakeside Phase 3 - Continuation of lakeside edge details plus the construction of two islands within the lake. The two islands are linked with a pedestrian footbridge spanning 26m and access to the islands by two 11m span timber jetties. Linear walkways with a timber log retaining wall were constructed on the islands and soft and hard landscaping including extensive earthworks were undertaken. The lakeside edge construction included reinforced concrete retaining walls, flagged paving, brickwork, street lighting and soft landscaping.
All the above phases were carried out by CHC acting as Principal Contractor working in close liaison with the client.
