The Project

Land remediation and construction of a new link road including the remodelling of junctions to accommodate a new 39 acre residential and commercial strategic development site. Carried out in 3 phases.

The works included:

•             Section 278 and Section 38 works, construction of a spine road bisecting the development site ultimately linking the A663 Broadway and Foxdenton Lane,

•             Associated earthworks to construct development platforms,

•             Section 185 Diversion of utilities;

•             Diversion of culverted and open watercourses,

•             Demolition works,

•             New HV, water, gas and comms installations

CHC have completed the work in 3 phases of works which utilised a combination of both inert and screened landfill material to cut and fill parts of the site, constructing a residential plot to 5% CBR and creating several commercial plots. We typically needed to add 2% lime/cement to the material to make it suitable for the residential plot and road construction. We did however have to work through Winter and the amount of lime/cement had to be increased.

Overall 275,000m3 has been cut and filled across the site with some depths of fill upto 8m. All material has been retained on site.

The 1000m spine road through the site joins on to Broadway via an 8m high raised embankment. Ground improvement works had to be undertaken due to the presence of peat and soft clays beneath the footprint of the embankment. We value engineered the proposed VSC solution by excavating and removing the unsuitable material and replacing it with engineered fill.  As part of the spine road construction, there were extensive drainage diversions, new drainage installations and the installation of new services.

The connection on to Broadway required the removal of a bridge whilst maintaining three lanes of live traffic. The bridge abutments were infilled were foamed concrete on a reinforced concrete base supported on CFA and SFA piles. Extensive service diversions were also required prior to certain bridge beams being able to be removed.

Despite Covid-19 the works continued at pace were as originally programmed. This is despite statutory undertakers causing a 4 week delay due to their own resource issues.
