Work Experience
At CHC, we place a lot of importance on offering work experience and know that it is a great way of encouraging young people into a career in civil engineering. During the last week of June, we welcomed Sophie, who spent a couple of days with us, to find out a little bit more of what it’s really like to work in civil engineering. She spent time out on site at Ilkley and Sandymoor, as well as speaking to our colleagues in procurement, estimating and Health & Safety. This is what she told us:
“During a recent work experience placement at Cheetham Hill Construction, I was able to spend time with some of the different departments that make up a construction company, and which showed me the depth of roles and skills within such a business. These included health and safety, estimating and quantity surveying. This opportunity also allowed me to visit a couple of sites to gain a better understanding of what civil engineering can include. Meeting some of the people from the business also showed me the different routes you can take to get into these roles, including degree apprenticeships and apprenticeships, as well as the career paths they can take. The whole experience has given me an insight into the day-to-day skills needed for different roles and a look into the inner workings of a construction company.”
We hope Sophie chooses a career in civil engineering and wish her every success.
