CHC start construction work on Withernwick II wind farm

08 Jun 2018

CHC start construction work on Withernwick II wind farm in the East Riding of Yorkshire. This project is believed to be the first UK wind farm to be financed without the requirement of government subsidies or support mechanisms. The project represents a major milestone for the UK onshore wind energy market.

Withernwick ll is an 8.2 MW extension to the existing Energiekontor wind farm built in 2013 and will take the overall capacity 26.65MW. The project will feature four Senvion MM92 2.05MW turbines.

Work is to set to be complete in Spring 2019 and the electricity generated by the project will be sold to a global consumer goods company under a long-term power purchase agreement.

The windfarm is being developed Energiekontor AG . The group has built over 117 wind farms across several European countries and has UK development offices in Glasgow and Leeds.

Adrian Taylor, CHC Managing Director, commented “We are delighted to be commencing work on this, the first non-subsidy onshore windfarm project in the UK, for Energiekontor. Despite the difficult financial constraints for clients in the on-shore windfarm market in England, we have worked with Energiekontor to provide the Balance of Plant package to a budget that has enabled the scheme to move forward.”
