The Project

Kirkham Memorial Gardens are of local and historical interest and had fallen into disrepair. Slope instability had been observed near the top of the boulder rockery and ground investigations confirmed that the existing slope was unstable.

Project works comprised the careful dismantling and removal of existing surface features from the gardens together with the protection of the cenotaph memorial and lime trees.

Follow-on works included weekly slope settlement and inclinometer surveys, excavation and disposal of unsuitable material from the unstable slope and replacement with suitable imported material, installation of drainage layer and surface water drains and manholes and installation of masonry faced retaining walls, steps and york stone paved areas.

New tarmacadam footpaths and walkways, installation of cenotaph lighting, restoration and cleaning of the cenotaph memorial and rockery construction, top-soiling and landscaping were also carried out.
