The Project

Bulk Earthworks: Restoration of the former open cast mine was undertaken by cut and fill bulk earthworks. This included the construction of two development areas to be built up in layers, compacted and tested on a frequency of 1 Nuclear Density test per 250m3. The volume loaded, hauled and placed was approximately 500,000m3.

Due to the nature of the site, the soil quality was very poor and we had to condition, stockpile and spread out the materials to dry and become suitable for fill. The materials re-worked included; Clay, Mudstone, Sandstone, Shale, Subsoil.

Surcharge Mound Construction: A surcharge mound was constructed containing 105,000m3 of soils. The surcharge mound consisted of 32 monitoring pins that were carefully installed and raised and surveyed throughout the construction phase.

The purpose was to increase the rate of the ground settlement in that particular area in advance of the plot being developed.

Additional works: Due to the excellent progress made on site the client gave us some additional works to load, haul and place topsoil (50,000m3). These areas were then cultivated and seeded.
