Award winning Aylesbury Waterside Theatre

10 Aug 2011

The Aylesbury Waterside Theatre in Buckinghamshire was a winner at the recent ICE South East England Engineering Excellence Awards. The project team, which included nine other contributors, was awarded the Sustainability and Community Benefit Award.

As Principal Contractor, Cheetham Hill Construction undertook the enabling works and piling and substructure works on the site for client Aylesbury Vale District Council.

The enabling works package included the diversion of a waterway, the "Bear Brook", construction of a road bridge, breaking up of surfaces, recycling suitable aggregates for re-use, location/diversion of existing services, installation of a high voltage electricity supply in conjunction with the statutory authority and the construction of a reinforced concrete enclosure for the substation.

Piling and substructure works included bulk basement excavation and disposal, design and build sheet piled retaining walls, design and build of a network of over 200 Geothermal Energy Piles, designed to provide geotechnical support to the main theatre whilst simultaneously delivering an environmentally friendly energy source to the final project.

The basement was of a waterproof construction comprising slab and retaining walls and underground drainage.
