CHC scoops silver at the Green Apple Awards
Cheetham Hill Construction has been presented with a Green Apple Silver Award for Building Construction Habitat by the Green Organisation for its Ravenhead Household Waste Recycling Centre project.
CHC competed against more than 500 nominees in the national award scheme for environmental best practice and attended a recent presentation ceremony at The Houses of Parliament.
The Ravenhead Household Waste Recycling Centre project was completed earlier this year for client Merseyside Recycling Waste Authority and required the design and construction of a new HWRC in St Helens.
Biodiversity and sustainability played a big part in the project and careful consideration was given to incorporating these aspects into the works.
Bird boxes were made from sustainable materials by a local school and attached to trees on site during National Nest Box Week to encourage bird nesting and insect houses were created and installed. Consultation was also undertaken as part of the CIRIA Big Challenge, which led to changes in the original landscaping maintenance plan, e.g. changing the timing of hedge cutting to avoid the nesting season.
There has been 60% increase in areas of high ecological value and the site now includes 650m2 of wildflower planting instead of grass seed, 1532m2 of new trees selected for local provenance and a 465m2 area of wildlife meadow.
