The Project

Erection of an artistic 20m high concrete structure on top of the former Sutton Manor Colliery in St.Helens, located close to Junction 7 of the M62.

The concept of Dream, which takes the form of a girl’s head with her eyes closed seemingly in a dream-like state, was developed by renowned artist Jaume Plensa and aims to promote thoughts of the future of St Helens as opposed to the industrial mining past. The work is intended to become a gateway feature for both Merseyside and Greater Manchester at the heart of the Northwest.

Dream was commissioned by St.Helens Council as part of ‘The Big Art Project’, an ambitious public art initiative from Channel 4 supported by Arts Council England, the national development agency for the arts, and The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity. After initially partaking in an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) exercise CHC was appointed as Principal Contractor to undertake the enabling work, erect the sculpture and surrounding hard and soft landscaping upon completion.

The enabling works included formation of a 600m haulage access road and drainage to enable access to the sculpture and installation of 35m deep bored piles for the sculpture foundations.

The sculpture itself was pre-fabricated off site in parts by specialist subcontractors and brought to site for erection.

It is founded upon seven concrete piles bored through the colliery spoil heap to a depth of 38m. The base of the sculpture is bolted upon an in-situ concrete pile cap, which consists of nearly 100m3 of concrete. The 54 sculpture units of the head are bolted together both horizontally and vertically to form a structural unit, which is designed to withstand the high winds present on a site of this exposed nature.

Now the sculpture is complete, the surrounding area has been landscaped and the access route returned to its former natural surroundings.

This project was awarded Highly Commended at the ICE North West Merit Awards 2010.
